Advent Study – DAY 5

HOPE Begins

with Repentance

Celebrating Repentance!

Hook Up 2HOPE is about Relationships:  Christmas is about restoring the relationship between you and your Heavenly Father.  Jesus taught that repentance is a serious step that everyone must take to be in any loving relationship.  All genuine relationships have failures.  When in a broken relationship, or a separation of any degree, ignoring wrongs is not a step toward healing.  Repentance is referred to and used over 49 times in the New Testament and 10 times in the Old Testament.   God designed us to be repentant for our failings.

Other words of a repentant relationship include:  remorse, contrition, penitence, sorrowfulness, regret, pangs of conscience, shame, guilt, self-condemnation, and conversion.  Anyone who does not acknowledge these feelings when they occur is in some form of relationship denial.  They are rejecting God’s gift to restoring a relationship, and without repenting, they will never understand loving relationships.  God gave repentance to us so we would be motivated to make positive changes in our lives that reestablish relationships.  Everyone has fallen short of God’s requirement of perfection, so nobody can skip repentance.

Repentance is a “Positive Character Quality”:  Repentance, while it seems to be offensive to some, is really an “opportunity for bringing back a relationship”.  Acknowledgment of an error is always the first step toward a resolution.  When reading Jesus’ Repentance Messages of HOPE below, and the Other Repentance Messages of HOPE at the end, try to visualize what a positive message repentance really is for you.  Like any loving parent, God is patient and hopeful we will approach him for forgiveness (our next “Hook-Up” light/bulb).  Repentance is a necessary first step.  Most of us know the pain of separation and rejection, but most can also can relate to the rejoicing of a renewed friendship.  God’s friendship will open the doors to a full life and the freedom from bondage to evil and sin.  Jesus’ Good News is that he is waiting with open arms for us to repent and become a part of God’s Kingdom!  He is waiting for us to “Hook-Up”.

Jesus’ “Repentance”

Messages of HOPE:

  • Mark 1:15 NLTThe time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!
  • Luke 15:10In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents."
  • Matthew 3:8 NLT “Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.”
  • Revelation 3:19 NLT “I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from [repent from] your indifference.”
  • Luke 13:3 NLT “… And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.“
  • Luke 15:7 NLT “In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!

The HOPES of Repentance:

On the Advent Card, repentance is the first step to lights/bulbs “6-9”, the 3 Gifts and Promises God has for us if we choose to “Hook-Up” and seek a personal relationship with HIM – all benefits of joining His “Forever-Family’.  Let this bulb #5 be a reminder to experience the benefits and joys of repentance.

Other “Repentance”

Messages of HOPE:

  • 2 Peter 3:9 NLT “The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.”
  • 2 Corinthians 7:10 NLT “For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.”
  • Hebrews 6:6 NLT “ … and who then turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people back to repentance; by rejecting the Son of God, they themselves are nailing him to the cross once again and holding him up to public shame.”
  • Timothy 2:25 NLT “Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts [grant them repentance], and they will learn the truth.“
  • Acts 3:19 NLT “Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.”
