PREFACE:

Christmas through the “Eyes of HOPE”

This is not a typical Advent study.  It does not focus on the manger, wisemen, angels, or shepherds.  These are great studies, but this one is different.  It was inspired by several merging factors.

First, it was inspired by Arthur Hinds’ book, “The Complete Sayings of Jesus Christ”.  It is an amazing chronological compilation of the words of Jesus, arranged from his first words in the Temple to his last after his resurrection.  It sparked the questions, “What was so important for God to tell us that He had to do it in person?”, “What were his key messages?”, and “What was so urgent?”  The answers are continuingly changing my theology and my life.  They awoke in me a new hunger to have “a closer walk” with Jesus.  They instilled a “sober awareness” that it was my responsibility not to be deceived by the father of lies in my walk of faith.

Second, knowing that I often felt distant from God, I had always been searching to establish a life of “confident HOPE”.  The website hope-24-7.com, partially motivated by a men’s Fight Club (i.e., Fight for your families – Nehemiah 4:14), was written as an attempt to convey the path to, and the elements of, HOPE found in obedience to God’s love. The journey to righteousness has many enemies.  I have always needed, wanted, and pursued HOPE.

Finally, knowing my own struggles to maintain an intimate relationship with Jesus, I worried about how my children and grandchildren would find their way to heaven.  The world and culture seemed harsher and more deceptive to me now than when I was growing up.  What will it take to help them see that connecting to their Creator as early as possible will give them the best life now, and celebration forever?  What could I say to them so they would “never give up HOPE”?

Thus, the theme Christmas is Hope” was born.  It centers around the “Urgent Messages of Jesus” that he came to share with us.  They were not popular then, and are not “politically correct” nor “woke” today.  In contrast, they contain powerful TRUTHS about life and HOPE.  Indeed, the H.O.P.E. Formula steps, derived from these messages of Jesus, express the urgency of repentance, forgiveness, surrender, spiritual warfare, and celebrating light in darkness.

The bulbs grow brighter:  As a result, these 25 Advent studies start with the TRUTHS of man’s separation from a loving Creator.  They reveal the resulting destructive horrors of sin on all relationships.  They address the fact that entire generations have chosen “darkness” rather than “light”.  Many just do not want God’s way of HOPE. There will be an accounting for choices that no one will escape.  As the studies progress, we see that God has always reached out with solutions.  Finally, in His time, He sent His Son Jesus to show us the way of HOPE back to His loving arms.  Christ paid for our HOPE with his sinless life.  After looking at the four lights of TRUTH, the lights get brighter fast and we see Jesus’ strategy in the Lord’s Prayer.  The last three lights grow brilliant with the amazing resources we have to “get connected” and ‘”stay connected” to God’s will for our lives.

Guiding the studies are four steps in a H.O.P.E. Formula.  These are exampled by and taught by Jesus.  They are all about our relationships to ourselves, others, and most importantly, our Savior and God.  Simply put, they are 1) Hook-Up to Him through Jesus, 2) Obey His Words to stay connected, 3) Praise Him for His help, and 4) Enjoy a full life in the protections and blessings of His promises.  Together, they give the peace and joy for our life that can only come from His HOPE.

This is what I pray my generation, and the generations to come, will have:  Persistent Victory of their souls in spiritual warfare.  Consistent Choices for “light”, not “darkness”.  Amazing HOPE in a trusting relationship with the Creator.  Eternal Life, together with me, in God’s “Forever Family”.

People Need the Lord

AVALON

"People Need The Lord

Everyday they pass me by I can see it in their eye
Empty people filled with care Headed who knows where
On they go through private pain Living fear to fear
Laughter hides the silent cries Only Jesus hears

[Chorus:]
People need the Lord People need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams He's the open door
People need the Lord People need the Lord
When will we realize People need the Lord

We are called to take His light To a world where wrong seems right
What could be too great a cost For sharing life with one who's lost
Through His love our hearts can feel All the grief they bear
They must hear the words of life Only we can share

[Chorus]

Advent Study – DAY 2

You are Invited

to God’s

Forever Family

Everybody Needs Hope!

Hope Star 2Dr. Gill, in his book “Imaginations”, observed that “Hope is to the human mind and soul what air is to the lungs; without hope we cannot breathe.  Spiritual hope is absolutely essential to the human Spirit.  Our quality of life is dependent on hope.”  God knew this – He designed us this way!  He has always provided a way of HOPE for his creation.  When you “Hook-Up” to the Father’s plan, nothing In life can leave you hopeless!

Jesus’ “Invitation”

Message of HOPE:

  • Jesus asked, ‘Do you finally believe? But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.’” John 16:31-33 NLT

Your HOPE

will always be challenged:

Jesus gave us a “heads-up” we would need his HOPE:  Your Advent Card has a black box surrounding two trees.  This displays how sin separates us from our loving Creator and presents a challenge to everyone in reconnecting to their Creator’s HOPE (follow the green upwards behind the bulbs).   Each tree represents a choice – to connect or not to connect with his HOPE.  If we choose to “Hook-Up”, we can actually enter God’s spiritual Kingdom “NOW” and start experiencing the Heavenly Kingdom each day.  We face three challenges in “Hooking-Up” to a life of HOPE.  This Advent study will help navigate them safely.

1) The Challenge of Self:  Even if you are blessed to have been raised with a knowledge of the Christian Bible and the TRUTHS of Christ, finding and maintaining HOPE is still a challenge - yet it is so important to accomplish.  You were designed to “love and be loved”.  Since love must always be your voluntary choice, you were also designed with the choice to reject love and pursue self or even evil.  Thus, your own will and choices become your first challenges. This was a risk God took so that any relationship with him would be genuine and from our hearts.  Honest, selfless (agape) love can never be demanded.

2) The Challenge of Family and Friends:  The next challenges to HOPE come from those around you – no parents, family, church, school, or society is pure, or without its faults and failures.  All of them have sinned (Romans 3:23).  It is easy to let others tempt you to doubt God’s love and TRUTH.   Thankfully, bad or unfortunate experiences can never block our journey of HOPE - unless we let them.

3) The Challenge of Satan:  Adding to the first two challenges, and building on them as well, are the challenges direct from Satan and his followers.  There are so many “almost true” voices to sort out.  Many messages around us present these half-truths.  It is difficult to detect their underlying errors.  It is often easier and more popular just to follow them without a challenge.  Satan uses many of the good things God has given us, like pleasure, power, and righteous pride, to misdirect our life choices.  They can be corrupted to give false hopes and presumptions that fail us in the end.  Well respected institutions of education, government, entertainment, employment, and even worship can unintentionally or even purposefully capture our souls with falsehoods that can separate us from the Creator’s HOPE.  Intellectualism, secularism, rationalism, relativism, and a host of other ‘isms’ all challenge the TRUTHS of Jesus, and need to be seen from His perspective to preserve God’s relationship and His HOPE.

What are

the Odds for HOPE?

Throughout time, with all these challenges, many seem to never find and live in Jesus’ HOPE.  As of 2 AM. October 12, there were an estimated 7,899,231,089 people living, increasing nearly ten thousand an hour.  Most estimates of the number of human beings who have ever lived range from 90 to 110 billion.  Of the nearly 8 billion alive today, less than one third live in Christian contexts where the Good News of Jesus’ HOPE could be shared.  Only God knows how many of them have discovered the personal relationship of HOPE in Christ.

Hope CHART 2

The H.O.P.E. Formula:

HOOK UP Arrow 2You have an invitation; now make a plan.  Your Advent Card has a formula on the left side, starting at the bottom.  We will be exploring this pathway of Jesus to your personal HOPE for the next 23 days.  Whenever we fail or lose H.O.P.E, we can simply follow its four steps:

  • Hook-Up to the Father through a simple prayer of faith.
  • Obey what you know to be TRUE from His Word immediately.
  • Praise Him promptly for life, forgiveness, belonging, and His Love.
  • Enjoy looking for, and being thankful for, His presence in your joy or sorrow.

It can be used daily, moment-by-moment, and for all of your life.  Enjoy!

Advent Study – DAY 1

Your IMAGE

is Like Your Father’s

Celebrating HOPE!

Jesus is Born to be the Messiah:  A proud parent is a sight to behold.  For loving parents, the newborn is beautiful and full of hope for the future.  Imagine your heavenly Father’s joy when Jesus was born.  He sent prophets to announce his birth and Eyes HOPE 2angels to trumpet his arrival.  God sent his son to earth with a special message of HOPE.  In this Advent study we will look at Christmas through the “eyes of HOPE”.

Manger 2Jesus is Born to be our HOPE:  Imagine your heavenly Father’s joy when you were born.  Our Creator desires a vibrant and satisfying relationship with each soul he has created – that includes you!  In this study we will hear about HOPE from Jesus’ own words.  What was so important to him that you hear personally?  You will be challenged to face brutal TRUTH and experience genuine HOPE that can only come by following Him.  Christmas brings us Jesus’ “LIGHT of HOPE” – for this life and forever.  What was Jesus’ Good News Message? – could it be that your “HOPE is NOW”?

Jesus’ “Message” of HOPE:

  • Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” John 8:12 NLT

The HOPE of Creation:

Creation Banner 2On the bottom of the Advent Card, it shows that from the beginning God created each soul with a desire to know them.  Following the green pathway to the top, it shows that His HOPE to know you is both “NOW” and “Forever”.  He desires that each soul He creates become a part of his heavenly “Forever Family”.  Our heavenly Father actually wants a personal and intimate relationship with each and every individual bornand that means you, too!  Read Genesis 1:1-5; 26-28, John 1:1-3, 1 Corinthians 8:6, Colossians 1:16-17, and Hebrews 1:2 (noted below).  You have your Father’s IMAGE!

HOPE Spoiled:

The Good News is that whenever God’s creation got in trouble, He always provided a way of HOPE back to Him.  He finally made a personal visit to us at Christmas to show us a new way of HOPE for which we were created.  God understands our struggle with sin, because we were made like him – full of creativity and independent self-will. We have his IMAGE in us.  He gave us the power to choose.  You can see it in every child.  As a loving God, however, He never wanted us to be separated from Himself.  He wanted us to choose “light”, not “darkness”.  The Father’s message, sent through His son, Jesus, is very important, as we will see in His H.O.P.E. Formula.

The bad news is that people have never done very well in maintaining a relationship with their Holy Creator.  In the past, Adam and Eve disobeyed in the garden, and that resulted in both spiritual and physical death.  Evil became so widespread that God ended the life of all those living but Noah’s family in a great flood.  He gave us a chance to start over.  That HOPE was soon squandered.  When people began to think they knew more that God, they gathered to build a tower at Babel to reach heaven and rule as gods separate from Him.  HOPING for them to know Him again, God chose to divide them by languages, and that helped for a while.  He also gave them the laws of Moses and then chose a special people to show the way of HOPE.  Generations ignored the messages of the prophets, priests, and kings God sent.  Rebellious children are always difficult to reach.  It was time for a final intervention – CHRISTMAS!  Jesus came as a Savior to give us HOPE anew.  He came to show us the way to join his family on earth – the Kingdom of God within us.  He also came to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins, offering us his Grace and a promise to escape judgment and be resurrected at our death into his Kingdom of Heaven.  Jesus, the only human ever sinless, gave his life so we might rejoin our Creator forever.   A relationship with our heavenly Father is possible through his righteousness and Grace!

HOPE Regained:

ADVENT CARD

Tree HOPE LINE 2Your Advent Card will take you on a journey of H.O.P.E., inviting you to establish and follow the “green line of relationship” from your birth to your physical death and then to your spiritual resurrection.  Jesus’ Messages will show you how to stay connected with the Father and escape judgment and separation.  He will show you the only way to satisfy the Father’s requirement for perfection.    This study will focus on the Words and Messages of Jesus that he came all the way to earth to share!  He came to give us “light” for our journey and “freedom” from the world’s darkness.  Each “TRUTH of HOPE” is a “light” on the Advent tree.

  • Genesis 1:1-5 NLT “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.  God called the light ‘day’ and the darkness ‘night.’  And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.”
  • Genesis 26-28 NLT “Then God said, ‘Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.’ So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, ‘Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.’”
  • John 1:1-3 NLT “In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God.  God created everything through him [Jesus], and nothing was created except through him.”
  • 1 Corinthians 8:6 NLT “But for us, there is one God, the Father, by whom all things were created, and for whom we live. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created, and through whom we live.”
  • Colossians 1:16-17 NLT “… for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see — such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.”
  • Hebrews 1:2 NLT “And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.”

Advent Study – DAY 3

It’s Your Choice

Why do we need HOPE?

Tree CHOICE 2So many Choices:  When talking to a wealthy gentleman to wish him “congratulations” he responded sadly, “I have several homes, major influence in my community, a successful business that continues to provide me money, and all the things I have ever wanted - but no one but you called to wish me well.  And for that matter, no one visited me during the last holidays.”  He felt alone with a hopelessness to be remembered, even by their children.  Without “love-based” relationships, all seemed empty.  Life for him was all about what he had and could establish before his death.  Once again, I offered to share the reason for my HOPE.  Jesus was clear - to have immortal meaning for your life, you must first “choose to be connected” to the Father’s HOPE.  That can only be done through the Grace of Jesus.  All other hope is based on presumptions or false truths.  It is the most important choice anyone ever makes!

So many are Hopeless:  Your Advent Card shows this hopeless separation, or “gap of hopelessness” between the Christmas HOPE (the green line of relationship is not connected at the bottom of the tree) and the Resurrection HOPE through Jesus (the cross and arrows at the top).  Sin separates every person from the Father when they are old enough to be accountable.  Jesus came to offer us a choice to 1) reunite with his family (the Kingdom of God on earth), 2) be free from the bondages of sin, and 3) get a “VIP backstage pass” to resurrection, skipping judgment when we die.  What an offer!  It does come with a price, however.  We must also choose to surrender our will to do things our way and obediently follow the way Christ has told us in his messages to us while on earth.  We need to “get connected” and then “stay connected’ with his H.O.P.E. Formula.  We must “Hook-Up” and “Obey” so we can “Praise” and “Enjoy” his HOPE.   You will use it many times as you learn to follow Jesus’ Message.  Carefully read these Messages of HOPE from Jesus.

Jesus’ “Choices”

Messages of HOPE:

  • John 11:25-26 NLTJesus told her, ‘”I am” the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives “in" me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?’“
  • Matthew 24:11-14 NLT “And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.
  • Luke 12:32-34 NLT “So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”
  • Matthew 24:35 NLT “Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.”

Why is TIME so important?

Time Manger 2You can never make a choice tomorrow:  Choices are always made today.  From our birth to our physical death, we were fashioned biologically by our Creator to live and make choices in “real time”, or “in the NOW”.  Our brains have memory of past “NOWs” and can anticipate possible future “NOWs”.   Nevertheless, everything we do and experience is always done in the “NOW”.  You can plan to do something tomorrow, but when and if it comes, you will always do it in the “NOW”.  Note Paul’s quote: “For God says, ‘At just the right Time Death 2time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.’ Indeed, the ‘right time’ is now. Today is the day of salvation.“ (2 Corinthians 6:2 NLT; [Underlines Mine])  Hopefully you will have many tomorrows, but even if you do, your  choice to follow his HOPE will always be made “today’, or in a “NOW” moment.  The timeliness of your choices is important because of time’s uncertainty – you really only have NOW to choose anything.

Why must “YOU” make a CHOICE?

Tree OTHER Judge 2Choices are for the living:  Jesus tells us that if you want to escape judgment and experience the benefits of knowing your Creator, you must personally do it before you reach the end of your time on earth.  Since there are no “post mortem” decisions, you must do it while you are still alive.  Refusing not to choose, or delaying your choice, is actually a choice by default.  God designed us that way.  Love should never be forced, and the choice is really about love.  Choices are always done NOW.  Love is always “real-time”.

Not all pathways connect with HOPE:  Your Advent Card shows other pathways, if you choose not to “reconnect” to your Creator.  These are trees that start with separation and end with judgment.  No one can escape either if these are their choices.  They can be connected to self, others, isms, or just about anything.  God made us with independence, so He understands our drive to “go it alone”, or “try a new way”, or just “be stubborn”.  The alternatives to TRUTH seem to have lots to offer, but their promises will all disappear when you die.  In business we talk about good choices that lose opportunity.  To choose a pathway to hope not “connected to Jesus” has a loss of opportunity as well.  You will miss the daily joys of God’s Kingdom.  Not many visit cemeteries, but that may be your only legacy over time with alternative choices.  So, there are two choices Jesus asks you to make, and two questions Jesus asks you to answer.

Two Choices:  Him (life, light, and joy) or Other (death, darkness, and temporary gain).  The Advent Tree, which leads to resurrection, or Any Other Tree, leading to judgment.  The Resurrection Pathway that connects to Grace, or The Separation Pathway that connects to judgment.  In each case, these are the same two choices.

Two Questions:   Will you connect NOW and reap the many HOPE benefits of God’s Kingdom in your life, or will you PUT your choice to connect OFF and “hope” you will connect at a later time. The sooner is always better – HOPE is a great thing to miss out on in life and death.
